Electrotherapy, a novel treatment for 4th degree haemorrhoids

Grade 4 haemorrhoids can cause considerable morbidity and usually require surgery to resolve the associated signs and symptoms. Such surgery is associated, in turn, with potentially significant post-operative morbidity, pain and a long recovery time.  Low dose direct current electrotherapy (DCE) targets the base of the haemorrhoid pedicle in an out-patient setting needing no preparation before treatment and no anaesthesia and with minimal risk of complications and no downtime. We demonstrated, in this study of 35 patients with grade 4 haemorrhoids, that DCE can be used to treat such high grade disease successfully in an out-patient setting, with no significant complications reported in the cohort treated.
